Amy Lee on fighting to be Evanescence’s female lead in male-dominated genre: ‘They wanted us to change the whole band and it scared me – but we won’
In the age of streaming and social media, 10 years is a lifetime. But that’s how long it’s been since Evanescence’s last album of new music.
In that time, frontwoman Amy Lee has experienced life, love, loss and everything in between. So it’s no wonder that the band’s new album, The Bitter Truth, might just be their best yet. There’s been a lot to talk about.
Since their rapid rise in the early noughties, Evanescence’s fusion of American hard-rock, symphonic metal and gothic pop has seen the band become one of the most commercially successful rock acts of the century. ’s Fallen, their debut album, has sold over 17 million copies worldwide. The kind of numbers that even the most prominent mainstream artists can scarcely imagine in the s, let alone those in the rock world. But it hasn’t always been plain sailing for Lee and co.
Not that that made her creative endeavours any less of a struggle in those early days. Lee overcame record label bureaucracy, pigeonholing and misogyny at large to become the voice of female emp

The Tragic Real-Life Story Of Evanescence's Amy Lee
BySergio Pereira
In the early s, Amy Lee and Evanescence exploded out of seemingly nowhere, taking the music scene by storm and building a special connection with their fans because of the poignancy of their music. There was a rawness, perhaps even sadness to the lyrics, as Lee sang about everything from relationship woes to dealing with severe grief and loss.

Like all good lyricists and writers, though, Lee drew inspiration from personal experience and channeled it into her art. Throughout the years, she has peeled back the curtain to discuss the tragedies that have shaped her, such as the loss of not only one but two of her siblings. In addition, she spoke out about the issues she had with Evanescence co-founder, Ben Moody, and how his departure proved to be a godsend because "the drama" was finally gone. This wouldn't be the only trouble she would face with the band, as she fought against the sexism of the music scene and even fired the group's manager for a litany of alleged offenses, including sexual misconduct. Plus many of Amy Lee's former bandmates have some not-so-good

Amy Lee burst on the music scene as lead singer of Evanescence, which she co-founded with guitarist Ben Moody in when they were just 13 years old. It was nearly a decade later that A&R exec Diane Metzler heard some demos they'd been recording, and was particularly impressed with "My Immortal." Convinced the song could be a hit, the band was signed to Wind-up Records, which brought them to L.A., where they spent the next two years working on what would eventually become their debut album, 's "Fallen."

"Fallen" proved to be a breakout smash, selling 17 million albums on the strength of "My Immortal" and other hit singles, including "Bring Me To Life," "Going Under," and "Everybody's Fool."
Since then, Lee has continued to front Evanescence, leading the band through some big personnel changes and seismic shifts, while always maintaining an uncompromising commitment to following her own artistic muse. Here's what she's been up to since "Fallen."
